Fun-Chang...A Treasure of Wisdom from Ancient China

Fun-Chang gives us here a simple,
poetical and humorous message!

“The old wise man said to the emperor:
“Your thoughts are limited.
Yet all you that you are able to imagine can exist.
Nothing is impossible.

USE WHAT YOU ARE

by Fun-Chang

A Chinese tale which takes us beyond time and space…

A Chinese Emperor wonders about the meaning of life.

He meets an old wise man who, in an unexpected way, allows him to widen his field of consciousness and catch a glimpse of amazing aspects of the lives of the succeeding civilizations on Earth.

With the old wise man, he learns how to live in the present.

By letting himself be guided by his intuition to “Use what he is”.

This tale comes to us from the treasury of wisdom of ancient China.
It has been attributed to Fun-Chang, an author who lived several centuries before Christ.

Its poetical density, the simplicity of the teachings given, the humor and the universality of its message inspired me to offer it on this site as a precious tool to balance your life and your activity.

As for all tales, the aim of this text is to open up your intuition and your ability to imagine.

I therefore advise you to read it, stopping from time to time to close your eyes and “see” the suggested images on the inner screen of your shut eyelids.

Some readers may wonder: “Are this emperor’s adventures true? Did Lo-Yang (the city) actually exist? Was it destroyed by an earthquake? Who really was the old wise man of this tale?

To answer these questions, let’s hand over to Buddha, who declared: “Truth is what is useful”.

This remarkable maxim shows that there is no absolute truth valid for all and at all times, but concepts which are true inasmuch as they are useful for a given individual, at a given moment in his life.

With universal wisdom, in the school of tolerance and respect for individual truths, everyone will discover in this Chinese tale what can be useful to them, what is true to them.

I wish that we all learn, like the emperor in this tale, to better “use what we are” in order to create, in our daily life, more freedom, more happiness and more awareness!

I am offering here a short extract of the wisdom it contains.

“The emperor exclaimed: Do you mean to say that, if we look around us and we use what is here in a complete way, then we only need to bring together the necessary elements; there is no need to run around to find them because everything is already here?

-Yes, the Sage said. Each man and each woman has the ability to see, to perceive and to be at one with the whole life if they are aware of everything around them, the grass, the flowers, the rocks.

This cannot be learnt through shutting oneself in a laboratory or a monastery, nor by limiting oneself to only one way, by looking at reality through only one technique or one way of perceiving.

Your path is a path destined to help the others see by themselves, to inspire them to rebuild.”
